The Iroquois are composed of six nations: Mohawk, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida and Tuscarora. Their original homelands were around the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Gaining control of most of the northeastern United States and Canada, their empire reached its zenith in 1680. The Iroquois Confederacy was known for democracy, equality, women's rights, and environmental respect. Today most Iroquois live in upstate New Yorkand Canada.

Contemporary Iroquois sculpture is rooted in the religion, history and legends of the Iroquois culture. The most popular carving material is steatite, commonly called soapstone. It is a soft stone, rich in coloration.
